Valentine's day for Freedom House Women

Valentine's day is almost here, and we have the opportunity to show love to the women at the Freedom House, a local home for women saved from prostitution and trafficking. Last year, Sonrise (men and women) made donations of goodie bags, recreation equipment, household goods, hygiene products, etc, and we would like to continue this loving tradition again. This year, the Freedom House is in need of new bed sheets and comforters for their 8 residents and asked if the Sonrise Women would be willing to deliver the Valentine's day goodie bags, cards, and baked goods again! Please reply to Johanna Chung (missjohchung@gmail.com) if you are interested in participating!

Project Compassion: Dessert for a Healthy Heart -- Friday, February 3, 2012 @ 7pm

Are you interested in short-term missions? Would you like to help provide care to the needy? Project Compassion is a non-denominational, evangelical organization sending teams of medical and non-medical people on short term medical trips to demonstrate the love of Christ by serving those who cannot otherwise access medical care. Working with local churches, every patient is offered prayer and counseling, with follow up by local pastors. Dr. Jane Anderson is hosting an information session for anyone interested. American Medical and Dental Services (AMDS) Medical Missions 2012

For those of you who attended the Missions Panel back in November, Dr. Dennis Ing from Kaiser Oakland shared about his experiences on medical missions trips with AMDS, a Christian medical organization based in Riverside, California. Below are the details for this year's upcoming trip. This will be a great opportunity to partner with some Christian doctors and dentists who putting the gospel into practice through medical missions.

New Year, New Leaders Wanted!

Dear Sonrisers,

It's the season of leadership transition! Leadership transition is an exciting time for newer members to take on ministry roles in Sonrise, but we also love when older members take on new or different ministry roles. Even if you are a seasoned member, please prayerfully consider whether you might want to serve your spiritual family here at UCSF in a specific way. For anyone who is potentially interested in a leadership position, there will be a meeting Tuesday (tomorrow) at 6:30pm at 1248 Arguello. We will be giving you more details about how Sonrise operates (e.g. how decisions are made, the roles of leaders beyond just their ministries, how much time commitment is actually involved, etc.). This is also your opportunity to ask any questions you might have. The meeting will be less than an hour.

We ask that you make a final decision about what ministry you'd like to lead by Sunday, Jan. 29. Please email core2011@sfsonrise.org by Sunday with your interest. The following Thursday night 2/2/2012 will be our official leadership transition at our regular Sonrise meeting on campus. Thanks!

BigFish4God Christmas Concert 2011

Pastor Joon Choi from BigFish4God Church invites Sonrise campus fellowship to a Christmas concert next Saturday, 12/10, at 7:30pm. They are inviting a number of University/campus fellowships from around the city, including Campus Crusade, Intervarsity, etc., and would love to see us there! Derrick & Audrey Lung, both physicians, are a married couple who currently live at Mission Bay and regularly pray and stay involved with Sonrise life. They are looking for a few people who would be willing to come over and play/babysit their son Brandon (who is a big bundle of joy!) on Saturday, 12/17, starting at 6pm, while they attend Audrey's office holiday party. Operation Christmas Child

The story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-37) gives a clear picture of God's desire for us to help those in desperate need wherever we find them. After describing how the Samaritan rescued a hurting man whom others had passed by, Jesus told His hearers, "Go and do likewise."

Operation Christmas Child is a program that lets us give gifts to children in third world countries. If you would like to do it on your own, you can contact Kim Lai (kimster419@gmail.com) to drop them off. If you would like to DONATE, you can paypal Kim at Kimster419@gmail.com. LADIES of SONRISE: Operation Christmas Child is also going to be a women's group event! Fall Retreat is here!! And it's not too late to come! October 28 - 31, 2011

Join us for an unforgettable weekend of fellowship and spiritual growth in Bodega Bay from Friday, Oct. 28 (leaving after school) until Monday, Oct. 31 (Sunday night is optional). We will be staying at a beautiful beach house right off the Sonoma Coast. Cost is $80 for regular members but only $40 for newcomers! (Cost includes meals, lodging, transportation, and activities.) We encourage you to come spend the weekend with us as we wrestle with some difficult issues. If you have friends who might be interested in learning more about God or Christianity, please invite them to join us as well!

World's Largest Corn Maze Field Trip!

Hey Sonrise!

This Sunday Sonrise is taking a field trip to the world's largest corn maze!!

What is the corn maze?

45-acre corn field labyrinth where you start at the entrance of the corn field and follow a puzzle maze on a map to find your way back out!

Why should I go?

1) Completing the maze earns you bragging rights to solving the world's largest corn maze

2) Nothing brings people closer together than trials and adversity (aka getting lost in a corn field for hours...)

3) You can invite anyone you want! The more the merrier. :)

4) If we have enough people, we can even break up into teams and RACE between the 'stations'...just to prove who's harder, better, faster stronger (cue ♫ Kanye West's "Stronger" ♫)

(Last year, we competed just one leg, and the GIRLS. obviously.)

This past February, the Sonrise womens group put together Valentines day cards and care packages for the residents at the Freedom House (a local home for women saved from slave trafficking and prostitution). The donations that many of you put towards these gifts were warmly welcomed and very appreciated. If you're interested in finding out more about the Freedom House and/or how we can respond to slave trafficking, please join me next week at City Church for an informative movie as well as testimony of Freedom House's founder!

Veritas Forum Planning Committee

For those of you who missed the Sonrise session from last Thursday, we heard a presentation from a Veritas Forum regional director about the vision behind Veritas Forum. Veritas Forums (www.facebook.com/veritasforum) (http://vimeo.com/9027384) are university events that engage students and faculty in discussions about life's hardest questions and the relevance of Jesus Christ to all of life. They seek to inspire the shapers of tomorrow's culture to connect their hardest questions with the person and story of Jesus Christ. Both UC Berkeley and Stanford have had much success with their Veritas Forums this year, and we hope to plan our own Veritas Forum this coming fall. End-of-the-Year SENIOR BANQUET: This will be an evening of fellowship, worship, food, and roasting 'n toasting our outgoing seniors on Saturday, May 28th @5:30pm at a church nearby - the same place as past banquets. This year's citywide celebration atop the City's highest peak marks the 89th anniversary of the event. Spring Retreat is in the air!

Hi Sonrise,

Spring Retreat is fast-approaching! We will be enjoying fellowship, spiritual growth, and encouragement in the Sierra Foothills from Friday, April 29 until Monday, May 2 (Sunday night is optional). We will be staying at an awesome two-story home in Shingle Springs, CA (~2.5hrs east) with an amazing view, tennis court, pool, lawn, hiking, ping pong table, pool table, two kitchens, two living rooms, etc - the same place as Winter Retreat 2010! The cost is $65 and includes all meals, lodging, transportation, and activities.

Heya sonrise ladies and gents,

The Sonrise women's group has been asked to help bake cookies for the women at various strip clubs on the infamous Broadway avenue strip. Our friend Hanbit Kuo has been distributing baked goods to the women who work there on several occasions during Christmas and Valentine's Day holidays in the past, and will be distributing 250 cookies on St. Patrick's Day this year as well. So we are hoping to gather a few groups of women together around various ovens to bake a batch of cookies at 8pm on either Monday (3/15) or Tuesday (3/16)!

Vaccinate kids with Sonrise!

I was reading through PLUS last week and came across this vaccination drive from the Dept of Public Health. I thought it would be fun to go as a group and help out - no need to be a health professional student, they need all kinds of volunteers! Let me know by this Thursday evening as we need to sign up by Friday, March 11th. I was thinking Saturday March 19th would be the best day to go help.

Freedom House Valentine's delivery follow-up

Thanks for each of your prayers, donations, support, and creative handiwork to make this event happen!

On Friday, the lovely Sonrise ladies made 6 cards and Valentine's day goodie bags for the residents. Check out pics here: https://picasaweb.google.com/YolandaL594/20110211WomenSGroup#

And on Sunday afternoon, we were able to meet with a staff worker from the Freedom House to deliver our donations just in time for Valentine's day. All together we collected 14 bottles of shampoo and conditioner, 6 journals, 6 deoderant, 3 tennis rackets and tennis balls, 3 cutting boards, and 4 lotion bottles.

In an email response from the Freedom House, the residents were "so very thankful for the cards and wonderful donations. It is soooooo great to have tennis rackets and balls!"

Please continue to pray for the Freedom House:

- for the residents - protection from oppressors

- freedom from fear and effects of trauma

- peace and deliverance to find God's grace

- for women in bondage - release from affliction

- opportunities to find resources to overcome obstacles they face

- justice for victims and for the perpetrators to be held accountable for their actions

- for the Freedom House - wisdom and energy for the leaders

- provide volunteers and supporters

- establish partnerships and receive services needed

Friday April 29 – Monday May 2 (Sunday night/Monday is optional)

Shingle Springs, CA (~2.5 hours east) – an amazing house with a wonderful view, tennis court, pool, lawn, hiking, ping pong table, pool table, 2 kitchens… etc. It's the same location as Winter Retreat 2010!

Cost: $65, includes all meals lodging, transportation, etc.

Sonrise womens group is having a Wine and Cheese Dessert Night

w a focus on the Freedom House! (more info below)

When: Friday, Feb 11th, 7pm – whenever

Where: Johanna's place (1541 9th ave)
What: wine and cheese/ dessert potluck

Join us for a night of yummies and sweets while making valentines day cards for the residents at the Freedom House, a local home for women saved from slave trafficking and prostitution. (http://www.freedom-house.us.com/vision.php)

Our hope is to continue Sonrise womens group's rep (not only for our "yayyyy's" + clapping and giggles ;) ) but also for our love for each other and other women in our city community.

The Freedom House is in need of donations for household items which we would also like to dedicate our funds and spend some time praying for as well.

Hope everyone is enjoying their breaks so far and relaxing after finals.

If you are one of the unfortunate ones (like me) who hasn't finished work and is still around -- we're having Sonrise as usual tomorrow!
