Winter Retreat MLK

Dear Sonrise-ers

Happy New Year!! I hope all of you had a safe and wonderful New Years Eve and let's thank God for 2009 and look for His blessings in 2010. I wanted to send you guys an email to remind you that our retreat is coming up in just 2 weeks! Kim and I along with the other coordinators are working hard planning the retreat and the sooner people sign up the easier it will be for us. Thanks to those who have already signed up and if you are considering it please sign up!

We will be sending more emails as the days get closer. Please look at the google spreadsheet as well.

As for the budget, we are keeping it right now at $70. That could fluctuate a little but please use that as a pretty firm estimate of costs. The cost does not include ski rentals or lift tickets.

God Bless,

-Derrick

Winter Retreat MLK

Hi Fellow Sonrisers!!!

Happy Holidays!

Reminder to sign up on the google doc for our winter retreat on MLK weekend Jan 15-18 (Fri-Mon).  Sunday night is optional.  We are going to South Tahoe, but skiing and snowboarding is also optional.  Estimated price is $70 with ski/board rentals and lift tickets separate.

The exact address of the house is 5002 French Creek Road, Shingle Springs, CA.

Not everyone is going to ski/snowboard, others are all welcome to come and just fellowship, sip on hot cocoa and make some snow families.

Things to do:
Sierra at Tahoe(http://www.sierraattahoe.com/) address: Sierra-at-Tahoe® Resort • 1111 Sierra-at-Tahoe Road • Twin Bridges, CA • 95735 • (530) 659-7453

Adventure Mountain(http://www.adventuremountaintahoe.com/) endless sledding. This is great for snow play as well.

The theme for winter retreat is "Becoming Whole".  The theme for Sonrise the past quarter was Who is God and Fall retreat's theme was Our Identity in Christ.
To continue our themes, this winter retreat we are going to talk about how God completes us.
How to keep our minds and hearts focused on bringing glory to the kingdom of God and actions that bear fruit.
How do we keep ourselves focused in our busy lives to continually give sacrifice and complete our lives with God's help.
Please remember to also sign up for roles and let me know if you would like to be a point person with bible studies/worship/devotionals and wo/men groups =)

Message about Sonrise Retreat 2010

Fellow Sonrise-ers,

Thank you for the responses from my initial email. This will be a learning process for Kim and myself and I thank all the feedback that we have been getting.

Kim and I would like this retreat to be both fun but also to help our brothers and sisters grow in their faith. There will be time for devotionals, bible studies and wo/mens groups during the morning and night time. However, during the day we will be giving people the option to go skiing. Depending on the amount of responses we will either charter a bus or have individual cars drive to the slopes. It is about 45 minutes from the house to the slopes so those skiing/snow boarding will have to account for the drive time. Those who do not want to ski or board can relax at the house or spend time studying or enjoy fellowship with others. We might also try to do some sledding nearby if that is available. I know for me I will be at the house either cooking or sledding.

Merry Christmas to you and your families!

-Derrick

Sonrise Winter Retreat 2010

Dear Sonrise-ers,

Merry Christmas!! May God bless your family during these holiday times.

Kimberly and I have been working on the winter retreat which is only a few weeks away.

I want to thank Ken for being a big help in planning with his experience and guidance. I also want to thank Mason for helping us secure the awesome house that we will be staying.

Please look at the spreadsheet and begin praying about coming to the retreat and/or helping out with any of the activities. The sooner you sign up the easier it will be for the coordinators to plan the retreat.

God Bless,

-Derrick

Loving Father, Help us remember the birth of Jesus,
That we may share in the song of the angels,
The gladness of the shepherds,
And worship of the wise men.

Close the door of hate and open the door of love all over the world.
Let kindness come with every gift and good desires with every
greeting. Deliver us from evil by the blessing which Christ brings,
and teach us to be merry with clear hearts. May the Christmas morning
make us happy to be thy children, and Christmas evening bring us to
our beds with grateful thoughts, forgiving and forgiven, for Jesus'
sake. Amen

Veritas Forum at UCSF: Jan. 27th, 2010: we need your help!

Hey fellow Sonrisers,

Congrats on finishing fall quarter! I would like to let you know about an exciting event coming up next month on Jan. 27th: The Veritas Forum @ UCSF!
We are having Dr. Ard Louis from Oxford University give a talk about science and faith. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about how we can answer some difficult questions about our faith and to invite your friends who might be interested in learning more about Christianity or who have difficult questions they'd like addressed! Please see the attached preliminary flyer for more info.

We could really use your help for this event in the following ways:

1. Getting the word out there: I would like to have one person in each program who could forward an announcement in early January to your program and then a follow-up email the week of the event.

2. Picking up the speaker at Stanford: We need someone to drive me down to Stanford on the morning of Jan. 27th to pick up the speaker and bring him to Mission Bay for his scientific visit that day before his talk at Parnassus that night.

3. Ordering/picking up food: We need two people who can order food for the event (for roughly 120 people, we'll get a more precise estimate later), pick it up, and bring it to Cole Hall by 5:40pm the evening of the 27th.

4. Set-up / Tear-down on the 27th: I'd like a few folks who can help set-up around 5:35pm on the 27th and some who can stay after the event and help clean up.

5. Discussion groups: We're planning to have a discussion group or multiple discussion groups a week to two weeks after the event to have a discussion about the talk and to help connect folks with communities where they can learn more about God and participate in faith-based service activities such as CityTeam, the Excelsior Community Food Pantry, etc. We hope that a number of you can be a part of this, bring some friends along, and participate in the discussion!

Please let me know if you would be interested in helping out in any of these ways!
Thanks so much!
May the presence of our Lord be with you this Christmas as we celebrate His coming to Earth to show us who God is and to give his life to redeem us!
--Chris McClendon
